Do a Custom Office 2016 Installation With the Office Deployment Tools.
This is sometimes necessary when you want to for example keep your old outlook version active. If you use the default installer of office 2016 it will make it so your old version won’t work, most of the time I need this is when the customer is still using Exchange 2007 which won’t work with the newest office version.
Downloading the Office Deployment Tools.
To make this work we will need the Office deployment tools which you can download here:
open it and extract it to a folder of your choosing.
Customising the Configuration.XML
First of we will need to customise the Configuration.XML file found in the extracted Office deployment tools. To do this right click the Configuration.XML file and choose Edit.
When opened delete everything in it and paste in the following:
<Add OfficeClientEdition=”32″ Channel=”Deferred” >
<Language ID=”en-us” />
<ExcludeApp ID=”Outlook” />
In the example above we choose “Office 365 ProPlus 32 Bit” English. You need to change this if you don’t have an office 365 Install. You can also change which programs you don’t want, If you want to for example exclude Word you add <ExcludeApp ID=”Word” /> below <ExcludeApp ID=”Outlook” />
For more configuration options look here:
When done save and exit.
Downloading and installing office.
For the next step we will be using PowerShell, alternatively you could use the command prompt. Open up PowerShell by right clicking on your start button and click on “Windows PowerShell (Admin)”
When opened browse to the folder where you extracted the Office Deployment tools. For example if you extracted the files to C:\Office Deployment you type cd “C:\Office Deployment” (including the quotation marks)
Type ./setup.exe /download
This will download all the files necessary for the install.
Type ./setup.exe /configure
This will install Office. Follow the on screen insructions if there are any.
If all went well you will now have a custom installation with the options of your choosing.
